Most people relate to their emotions as events. Something happens, and they feel something. But underneath every emotional response, there is usually a pattern that has been running longer than the current moment.
Understanding the pattern behind what you feel means looking past the surface emotion and asking: what triggered this? What did I reach for next? What direction did it pull me — Too High or Too Low? What did it cost me? What usually happens after? These questions shift you from reacting to the emotion to understanding the structure behind it.
Emotions are information. They are not always accurate information, but they always point to something. Anxiety might point to a perceived threat that may or may not be real. Numbness might point to a pattern of emotional avoidance. Anger might point to a boundary that was crossed or a pattern of reactivity.
